When Gender Matters in Scientific Communication: The Role of Generic Language

Prior research has documented gender differences in self-presentation and self-promotion. For example, a recent analysis of scientific publications the biomedical sciences reveals that articles with women lead author positions (first last) included fewer positive words to describe their results than men positions. Here we examined role peer-reviewed psychology, focus on generic language. When authors using statements (e.g., “Introverts extraverts require different learning environments”), those gloss over variability, frame an idea as broad, timeless, universally true, have been judged be more important. In sample 1,149 psychology published 2015–16 from 11 journals, found were less likely employ language positions, received citations (as did authored by men). We discuss how subtle difference may direct consequences for finding is interpreted cited, potential downstream career advancement men.
